I recently attended the economic development annual meeting. The event featured guest speakers/students from the 4 area high schools, who had an assignment to write an essay of "Why White County?" Why they love their community, why stay here and why come here. Also, what they want to see in their community for their future that would help others choose White County too. I took some notes on their central themes, straight from their words. I think we should consider these while forming this plan:
Community that's welcoming
Jobs
Investment in students
More things to do
Keep following new interests
New opportunities and experiences
Give workforce tools for the future
Internships and job shadowing within the county
Philanthropy
Close relationships
Pride and people getting along
Sporting and other group events
Investing in the community
Grow and keep people here
Age friendly opportunities
Listening to younger voices
Support in personal growth
Build together. work together
Continually want to help each other
Creativity in planning
Place making and growth
Why not White County!
This sounds like an emerging generation who are ready to embrace creativity, growth, and place making. If we don’t plan for that now, they’ll have less reasons to choose this county as the place they live and work. We need to start planning for White County’s future generations, with White County’s future generations.

All voices need to be heard and acted upon—especially younger voices, as they represent White County’s future.
Should we consider including younger residents on White County government advisory boards?
